Ice Fishing Trips

There are five guests maximum for a standard trip and eight to ten guests maximum for a custom trip. You’re going to want to ensure you’re prepared for the weather!  Dress in full winter gear, including warm socks, footwear, gloves, and hats. Rubber boots will be available if you need some, and sunglasses are recommended. You should also bring cameras and GoPros to capture the action. An underwater GoPro mount is provided for you.

You will need to get a fishing license to participate in the elevated fishing adventures. You can get these licenses at Hasty Market-Esso and Interior Mechanical Supply in nearby Kamloops. You can also get these licenses online.

For this unique Canadian experience, you’ll walk across the lake, drill a hole in the ice, peer down into the water and see a variety of fish to catch and release or to take home for dinner. If you want to keep your fish, your guide will clean it, package it, and provide you with a delicious recipe to cook your catch.

Types of Fish Found in British Columbia

The Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. annually stocks over 800 bodies of water in British Columbia. There are over 200,000 fish in these waters, and a few are more plentiful than others.

Rainbow Trout are native to the area west of the Rockies and make up the majority of the fish stocked each year. They range from pan-sized fish to trophy-class bruisers and are the most popular, and arguably the tastiest, fish to catch in B.C.

Kokanee Salmon are very plentiful and hardy fish and will survive in lakes that rainbow trout won’t. They’re very social fish, and you’ll often find the school where the fishermen are.

Lake Trout are common in Northern B.C., where it’s the coldest. Many lakes stocked with Lake Trout are pretty far off the beaten path, and fans of this particular fish will often sleep right out on the ice to make sure they’re ready early when the fish are biting.

Other types of fish you’ll find while ice fishing in British Columbia are Brook Trout, Northern Pike, Walleye, and Yellow Perch.

Where To Stay in Sun Peaks

Sun Peaks Ski Resort is the second-largest ski area in British Columbia and has plenty of activities for the whole family. Nancy Greene’s Cahilty Lodge is right in the middle of the action near the Village Center. This Sun Peaks hotel is within walking distance of some of the best shops, restaurants, and activities. While staying at the hotel you can enjoy our hot tubs, and fitness center, and many other amenities. There are many family-friendly activities in addition to ice fishing.

Nancy Greene is known as a major name in Canadian skiing. She had a nine-year ski racing career in the 1960s where she won many Canadian, U.S., and international skiing competitions. As she married and had children she switched to teaching and coaching and then went on to real estate and establishing resort areas. She developed Sun Peaks Ski Resort in the 1990s and continues to live there and be active in guest relations. She named Cahilty Lodge after a local pioneer ranching family. It was the first hotel built in the area and is in the center of everything.

At Cahilty Lodge we offer a few different rental types so you will be able to find the best Sun Peaks accommodations for your stay. We have hotel rooms that sleep 1-4 people, making it a great option for solo travelers or small groups. Studio and loft rooms have sleeping space for 2-9 people. They all have full kitchens or kitchenettes, access to ski storage and coin laundry, high-speed internet, and convenient parking (fees may apply). These studios and lofts work well for solo travelers, couples and families, or other groups.

There are also one-bedroom rentals that sleep up to four and two to three-bedroom units that accommodate 6-8 people. The two and three-bedroom suites all have two bathrooms and full kitchens. These full kitchens will be the perfect place to cook your catch from your ice fishing adventure.

Ice Fishing is one of the most popular activities at the resort, so make your reservations now! We recommend booking your ice fishing excursion from home before you even leave for your trip, this way you are sure to get a time that is convenient for you and all the tours will not be sold out.

We can’t wait to have you stay at Cahillty Lodge. If you are traveling alone, with one other person, or with a larger group, we have comfortable and cozy accommodations for you.
